The first significant change in my day was my morning coffee. Instead of Splenda and 1% milk, I had to drink it with Xylitol and Skim milk. Unfortunately, the xylitol sent me racing straight to the bathroom. It's not good for my stomach.
Second big change: Normally, I don't bother with breakfast until I return from dropping off my little one to playgroup. By then I am starving so I just buy a sandwich or hot cereal at a cafe. Now, I had to eat breakfast by 9:30. Breakfast was 2 slices of whole wheat bread, and an egg omelette with one yolk & 3 egg whites. I also filled up my newly purchased "Nutrition by Tanya" water bottle with bottled water and slices of lemon in it to give it some flavor, and started chugging away. I'd been suffering from headaches for a long time. Cutting out Splenda and drinking a lot of water seemed to remedy the problem pretty quickly. Toddler tried to steal my omelette and I was having none of it!
After dropping him off to playgroup, I stopped at the health food store and bought a box of Truvia. I was amazed at how much clearer my mind was and how much more energy I had, after eating a decent breakfast instead of just grabbing food.
3 hours later I had to have a mandatory snack, so that my metabolism wouldn't slow down. I wasn't even hungry yet! For my snack I chose to have a fruit, so I had an apple.
At 1:00 I started feeling panicky. I still had so much work to do; between paperwork, phone calls, housework, and needing to run out to do errands I didn't see how I would have time to prepare a decent lunch. But I couldn't grab a bowl of cereal like I usually do. I opted for the easiest lunch option on my plan: 1/2 whole wheat pita with a tsp of peanut butter. Lunch also called for a salad, but there was just no time to prepare one. I hastily nibbled on an Italian pepper, promising myself to be better prepared for the next day.
On Wednesday I serve milchigs for supper. I knew this would be the most challenging for me, because the menu for my family was: cheese latkes, pizza wraps, and deep fried steak fries. yikes! On Wednesdays I end up very hungry because I'm not the greatest fan of pizza wraps. So I end up eating tons of cheese latkes, and then I nosh all night. So what did I do? I went out and got 2 salmon fillet tails, for myself and my husband. I planned to make a baked potato for myself, and of course, a salad. I also bought ingredients for a vegetable soup which is considered a free food item on the plan. I got 2 coffees at the grocery: one for Ashley (my autistic son's aide), and one for myself - in which I did not put sugar or milk, intending to add truvia and skim milk at home.
For my midday snack I had a coffee with a TAP muffin, the special diet muffins Tanya sells.
But then everything went awry. The afternoon was a truly crazy one. Yoni (this will be my pen name for my autistic son, even though I know most of the readers of this blog know his real name) was having a rough afternoon and I was extremely busy keeping up with his tantrums and craziness. In one of his fits of rage he actually broke my new water bottle. WAH WAH. It's expensive and it's amazing, and it's already broken. Guess I'll get a new one at the weigh in next week. Then I got super-preoccupied with a whole bunch of mini-crises, including little Toddler whining that he has a toothache, and trying to find a pediatric dentist who can see us in the next few days. I kept chuckling and telling Ashley that I feel like a chef on Chopped or Masterchef, scuttling back and forth between the stove, toaster oven, oven, hand mixer, etc. Every single gadget was in use as I mixed and fried cheese latkes, prepared and baked pizza wraps, heated up oil and fried steak fries and drained and refilled them, prepared the salmon fillets and put them in the oven (mine with lowfat mayo, spices and sesame seeds, my husband's with cornflakes crumbs on top), and sliced and spiced a potato (I used cooking spray) to bake. I served the kids, and then my husband came home, and everythign was finger-licking delicious. So it turns out that when I'm on diet, my entire family eats well too? I guess that's because I pay more heed to the food I'm preparing! So unfortunately, I did not get to eat a salad for supper. I'm disappointed, because I mamish did not touch a single vegetable today. Veggies take a lot of preparation and I simply did not have time! Nor did I have time to make a big pot of soup to use all week. I am still planning to do it later tonight, IYH, and possibly even a salad.
I drank flavored seltzer with supper. And since I didn't really get that full, i had a banana, my seconf of three fruits of the day. I will still have my third fruit later, probably an orange, and I'm allowed to have one "treat" at the end of the day, which is any packaged item under 115 calories. Maybe a big salad, instead of what I was supposed to have at lunch or supper, will be able to take the place of the snack.
Not bad for a first day. I can use some improvement; I slacked off on the water once the water bottle broke, and I did not have any veggies :(. I hope that becomes routine soon. But just cutting out on the tons of soda I drink a day, tons of snacks I eat a day, cookies, etc.... that on its own was a big breakthrough for me.
I should be exercising too, but as you can see, I don't really have the time. I'm looking into purchasing portable exercise equipment, such as a treadmill, elliptical, bike, etc., something I can put into a closet or fold down after use, so that at least at night when I'm relaxing in front of the computer, my body moves. If I'll still have the energy...
That's it for today. I'm off to see a man about a dog. J/K.... I'm off to make a big pot of soup. Or a salad. Or both.
The packaged snack I ended up having was a carob rice cake which is exactly 115 calories! I also had a salad and an orange. yay for a good day and hopefully tomorrow will be even better!
ReplyDeleteSounds like you did fabulously, especially considering that you did not have a lot of time to prepare things. Do you like baby carrots? If yes, you should always keep a bag around to munch on when you don't have an extra minute to cut anything up.
ReplyDeleteI lost the straw from my water bottle and couldnt find a replacment. You can have mine.
