I want to thank my dear FB friends for giving me the wonderful idea to eat chicken soup before the zman of Shabbos. It was PERFECT. I checked the plan and it's counted as a protein, so I allowed myself to have a bowl before the zman, and then another bowl during the seudah. Maybe a little too much, but hey, it's Shabbos. And it's 10 pm. And I skipped my 'treat' on Friday... After the Friday night meal I skipped my usual indulgence of chocolate and had a handful of cubed tropical fruit. YUM.
I also want to thank everyone who gave me wonderful ideas for thickening and improving my flopped soup. I'm particularly thrilled and grateful that the great Tanya herself is reading the blog and providing me with feedback on my food intake and how to improve my soup.
In any case, Shabbos worked out great; I actually may have eaten more than I eat on a regular Shabbos, can you beleive that??? But I was eating nutritious and healthy food instead of pigging out on rugelach, sponge cake, chocolate, soda and snacks.
I woke up @9 a.m. with a debilitating migraine, dizzy, and a little bit stomach-achey. OH NO. NOT AGAIN. It seems to happen often on Shabbos; I wonder if it's the gluten in the challah? Who knows. Anyway, I had my coffee with Truvia and skim milk. NOrmally I do not eat breakfast on Shabbos, but I end up snacking on pastries instead. Today, I sat down to half a bowl of cheerios with skim milk @ 11:30. My husband came home from shul surprisingly early - 12:30 instead of 1:15 - so I didn't really need lunch yet. But hey, the seudah is held when the seudah is held, so I had a small piece of challah, small piece of fish, and a bit of eggs and tomatoes. By then, the Tums, Alka Seltzer, Tylenol and Motrin I had taken since waking up, were finally working, and I had my shabbos nap @1:00. I woke up at 2:00 and was disappointed that the migraine and wooziness were back! Is it the challah? Who know....
Normally I have another coffee and pastries when I wake up from my nap, but I did not want to agitate my delicate stomach. Instead I sat down at 2:30 and had my first snack of the day, the TAP muffin. It's delicious and filling and definitely satisfied my craving for something baked for the day.
Now came the hard part..... the loooong Shabbos afternoon. By 3:30 my stomach was starting to growl and I wondered how I would manage until my big melaveh malkah meal which wouldnt happen before 9:30 pm. That's when I had a flash of inspiration: Who said I had to save my third big meal for melaveh malka? I'd rather have it for shalosh seudoes. This left me the option of 3 fruits, another snack, and my 115 calorie treat to spread through the day. So right then and there I had a nice big juicy apple, and at 6 I sat down to a yummy shalosh seudos. I opened a can of tuna and put that into 1/2 a whole wheat pita, and finished up the salad from the day before, with a dash of SaladMate dressing. Delish!
at 7:30 I had my second treat of the day, a bag of Popcorners, which I ate slooowly, relishing every single bite. My toddler, of course, kept mooching off my bag.... Right before Shabbos ended at 9:00, I had an orange. Not bad for a long Shabbos afternoon! That's more food than I normally have on shabbos... and good food!
By the time my husband made havdalah and the kids were in bed it was 10:30 and my stomach was growling again. I carefully considered what my Treat would be. Hmmmmm.... 3 small chocolate chip cookies with decaf coffee? My sister mentioned popcorn. Brilliant!!!1 bag of microwave popcorn is 160 calories, so I shared it with my oldest son.
You'd think I ate enough for the day and should cut up some peppers if I still need to eat. But here's where I went wrong, and cheated for the first time. My wonderful next door neighbors send me in a nice big piece of fresh potato kugel every Motzei Shabbos. I had not yet gotten around to call her to cancel it, when they knocked at my door with a plate of delicious, fresh, tantalizing, piping hot kugel. My knees grew weak. I was not going to reject the offering, nor toss out such a divine piece of culinary heaven. So I quietly sat down, put my guilt in the garbage, and enjoyed one piece of "no no" - as Alice had referred to potato kugel. I ate only one piece, not my usual two! That;s a breakthrough! LOL
This week is going to be quite challenging. I have appointments scheduled for every day, and Yoni will be home tmorrow, as his counselor hurt herself and a sub was not found. But IY"H I hope I will be able to meal plan tomorrow, replenish my supplies, and even buy a vegetable chopper and a bunch of veggies so I always have ready chopped veggies to throw together a salad.
Hope you had a good Shabbos!
